Babywearing this Halloween? We’ve got you costumed.
If having a baby in the house has never been your excuse to avoid a good soiree, this article is for you. When the Halloween party invitations start rolling in, you’ll no longer have to fret about how to costume yourself and the baby. Why not dress the two of you up together? The results are unique, cute, and, perhaps most importantly, easy to create.
This Halloween, let babywearing be your excuse not only to find your inner child, but to bond with your baby in a new way. Here are some costume ideas for newborns through toddlers that you can put together in an afternoon with the carrier you already have. (Each of these ideas will work with your choice of a mei tai, wrap, pouch, or ring sling.)
And, hey, if you and Baby stop by the store on Halloween (or send us a photo) wearing one of our ideas, we’ll give you 25% off your purchase! Now that’s something to party about.
Newborn
- Bee on a Flower: Use adhesive-backed felt to make black and yellow stripes along the body of your carrier. Wrap two black pipe cleaners around a soft headband for Baby’s head, and pop your little one into the carrier. Mama dresses in all green and wears a headband affixed with oversized flower petals to complete the look.
- Butterfly: If you’re crafty, you can make a pair of oversized butterfly wings to attach to the body of your carrier once Baby is inside. If you’re not, inexpensive wings are available at most costume stores. Mama can wear a headband wrapped with pipe cleaner antennae.
Baby (3-12 months)
- Spider on a Web: Mama dresses in all white, and wears Baby into a (preferably black) carrier affixed with eight dangly spider legs. These legs can be made from men’s black tube socks stuffed with fabric scraps and can be safety pinned to the carrier. If you have a mei tai, Baby’s own legs will be two of the spider’s, as will the shoulder straps if you cover them in black fabric.
- Mama Kangaroo and Joey: What kind of Halloween babywearing article would be complete without a mama and baby kangaroo costume? Mama and Baby should both wear tan, as well as soft headbands affixed with ears. The ears can either be molded from brown pipe cleaners or sewn from fabric scraps. Pop Baby into a sling (preferably a tan wrap, pouch, or ring sling to maximize the joey-in-pouch effect), and make a large, broad tail for yourself with a few foam pool noodles wrapped up together in tan fabric.
Toddler (12-18 months)
- Mama and Baby Gorilla: Mama and Baby should both wear black clothes and hats, and can paint their faces black, too, if comfortable doing so. Cover your carrier in black furry fabric, and swing Baby onto your back (preferably in a mei tai). Give your baby gorilla feet by affixing extra furry fabric to the tops of his or her socks.
- Piggyback: Dress Baby in pink, paint his or her face pink if comfortable doing so, and acquire a stubby pink pig nose with an elastic from the dollar store. Swing baby onto your back (preferably in a mei tai), and give him or her a headband to wear wrapped with pink pipe cleaners molded into ears.
