Spring things: New stuff we love at Birth Source

One of the many fun parts of working at Birth Source is that every day is a shopping day. We spend hours scouring all available channels for the world’s best natural parenting supplies, and every once in awhile, we come across a real winner. More than most, we love finding items that will support a journey of instinctual parenting; more often than most, we hit the “Buy Now!” button to bring those same items home to Edmonton, and home to you.

You know the little zing you got when you found a baby carrier that you and your baby loved equally, or the fluffy cloth diaper that met your budget and expectations? That’s the kind of feeling we hope to elicit with everything we carry in the store, and it’s been a long time since we last shared our must-haves with all of you. So join us this month for a little gratuitous window shopping, will you? (And P.S., if you evercome across something you think we’d love, please let us know. We trust your taste, and we’d love to bring in something that you can’t find anywhere else.)

Boba Baby Carriers

Like the Ergo? Then you’ll love the Boba. This soft structured carrier works for infants to preschoolers (no newborn insert required), has two waistbelt pockets, and features a smart little why-didn’t-I-think-of-that purse strap holder that keeps your bag from falling off your shoulder at every turn. An adjustable chest strap prevents the dreaded uniboob effect, and easily adjustable shoulder straps make it easier and quicker to nurse on the go. Of course, the Boba also comes in prints nearly as beautiful as your baby.

Cosy Baby, Happy Mommy woven ring slings

If hand-dyed and Edmonton-made don’t sell you on these gorgeous woven ring slings wraps, perhaps their creator will. Erin Heard is a local babywearing educator who tried all kinds of carriers for her three girls before taking matters into her own hands. The results speak for themselves: these slings will take babywearing comfort and style to a new level.

Sling Sisters Organic wraps, wet bags and snack bags

Another new babywearing option at the store comes courtesy of the Sling Sisters. This Canadian duo has mastered the art of the wrap where so many others have fallen short. One size fits all? Check. Organic cotton? Check. Limited stretch for maximum support? Check. Gorgeous prints? CHECK! We love the prints so much that we ordered their wet bags and snack bags, too, the former of which is fantastic to have on hand for swim dates, unexpected spit-ups, or just to store up to six wet diapers.

Chimparoo ring slings

We've long been fans of the Canadian-made Chimparoo woven wraps, so when the company announced plans for a ring sling, we did a little happy dance. The best part of these ring slings is that Birth Source had a hand in designing them! We consulted with Chimparoo to make sure these were easy to use and adjust even for first-time babywearers, and we're so pleased with how they turned out. They're ideal for babies from birth to 40 pounds, so this might just be the only carrier you ever need. Do we even need to mention how beautiful the prints are? (They are really beautiful.)

Baby Mama Naturals body care

Necessity is always the mother of invention, isn’t it? In this case, a St. Albert mom spent her pregnancy looking for natural body care products that were free of SLS, parabens, talc, and heavy preservatives. Coming up short, she started mixing up her own concoctions, and the rest is history. The cloth diaper-friendly Happy Bum Balm and the wow-it-actually-works Mama’s Hand Lotion are two of our favorites from this new line.

Bamboobies Bamboo nursing pads

Just when you thought there wasn’t much to improve about the utilitarian nursing pad, a company like Bamboobies comes along and blows us all away. First, they made their regular pads heart-shaped. Cute, sure, but functional, too! The heart shape conforms to the breast, making the pad virtually invisible under your clothes. You’ll know it’s there only because it’ll work all day: preventing leaks (thanks to absorbent bamboo), staying warm (thanks to the absence of cotton and paper), and saving you money (because they’re washable).
